Catalpa bignonioides aurea, also known as the Indian Bean Tree, is an outstanding deciduous tree grown as an isolated specimen. It produces a spreading canopy and the large leaves provide dappled shade. The large yellow leaves, have bronze tints when young, provide interest in themselves although the tree is slow to leaf up in the spring. Hard pruning or pollarding of the tree encourages the leaves to grow bigger. Orchid like flowers are produced in mid summer when mature, these are followed by large bean pods that turn black in the autumn. Mature height 10-15m.
